| Abstract | The objective of this research was to evaluate the changes in land use in the of city of Rio Claro (SP) and its immediate surroundings in the period from 1988 to 1995, with the support of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cellular Automata (CA) models. Aerial photography from the selected dates and cartographic documentation were used for the collection and analysis of data (cadastral map at a 1:10,000 scale and topographic maps at a 1:50,000 scale, in digital format). The methodological procedures used to model the changes in land use were performed in the CA dynamic modeling platform named Dinamica EGO. The simulated maps showed a good approximation with the effectively observed land use data and were validated by a multi-resolution approach. According to the obtained results, the period from 1988 to 1995 showed no significant urban growth, a fact due to the densification of occupation in residential settlements already implemented in the previous period, as well as by economic stagnation resulting from a national crisis, which was reflected in the growth of São Paulo state, influencing the city of Rio Claro. |
